The BMW 3-Series May be seen as a bit of cliche, but with good reason-it's the world's best-selling premium saloon because it's very good at what it does. And it's just got even better. BMW has just released full details of the new 3-series, due to arrive in February next year, with plenty of stuff to get excited about.

So the new look isn't exactly avant-garde, but the refreshed exterior, including new front end and various other subtle visual tweaks, clothes an all-new, stiffer chassis with a wheelbase 50mm longer than before. The proportions have changed slightly: the new three is 93mm longer than before, but a smidgen narrower (6mm), with stability-enhancing wider tracks at both ends (up 37mm and 47mm front/rear).

From launch, we'll get four engines, all with BMW's TwinPower turbo tech, consisting of two versions of the 320d (standard and Efficient Dynamics), a new 328i and the 335i. The six-cylinder 335i remains the current 306bhp range-topper at 35,525. Hitting 62mph in 5.5. the 328i is a 2.0-litre four-clinder, replacing both the old 325i and 330i, comes with 245bhp, 258lb ft of torque and a respectable 0-62mph time of 5.9 seconds-all for 29,060.

Both 320d variants cost 28,080, though the ED gets 20bhp less than the standard car's 184bhp and a raft of eco-addenda to give just 109g/km. an 8spd auto will be available on all cars-as efficient as the 6spd manuals-and there'll be 'xDrive' 4x4 variants and hybrids by the end of 2012.
